Sadhvi Pragya Thakur Among Poorest Lok Sabha MPs: A Glimpse Into Her Profile

top-news

Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, a controversial figure due to her involvement in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, has emerged as one of the poorest Lok Sabha members of parliament. The analysis conducted by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) reveals that Thakur has declared assets worth ₹4.4 lakh, making her the third poorest MP in the outgoing parliament.

Thakur, a BJP leader, gained prominence after her victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Bhopal seat in Madhya Pradesh, where she defeated veteran Congress leader Digvijaya Singh by a substantial margin of 3.65 lakh votes. Known for her controversial statements, Thakur has been a polarizing figure in Indian politics.

One of the notable aspects of Thakur’s political journey is her affidavit filed during the 2019 elections, where she mentioned possessing a silver-coated brick engraved with the name of Lord Ram. This brick was associated with the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, which was inaugurated in January 2022.

For the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024, Thakur has not been given a ticket by the BJP. Instead, Alok Sharma, a former mayor, will be contesting from the Bhopal seat.

Interestingly, the poorest MP in terms of assets is YSRCP leader Goddeti Madhavi from Araku in Andhra Pradesh, with declared assets worth ₹1.4 lakh. Following her is Chandrani Murmu, the BJD MP from Keonjhar, Odisha, with assets worth ₹3.4 lakh. Notably, all three of the poorest Lok Sabha MPs are women, according to the ADR analysis released on March 28.

The ADR analysis also highlights the stark contrast in asset distribution among MPs, with an average asset per sitting MP estimated at ₹20.71 crore for the Lok Sabha elections in 2019. This disparity ranges from the poorest MPs with minimal assets to the wealthiest like Congress’ Nakul Nath, whose net worth has crossed ₹700 crore.

The financial profiles of MPs, both rich and poor, provide insights into the diverse backgrounds and economic circumstances represented in India’s political landscape.
